Comprehensive pet dental care

Just like humans, animals need regular dental care to prevent tooth and gum diseases. Comprehensive pet dental care goes beyond giving your pet's teeth a good scrub. It's our chance to make sure pets achieve and maintain optimal oral health.

Pet Dental Care Services

At Mountainside Veterinary Hospital, we’re passionate about providing comprehensive dental care for every pet—from basic dental exams and routine dental cleanings, to x-rays, extractions, and surgeries.

Common causes of pet dental problems

Although cavities are less common in pets than in people, they can have many of the same dental problems that people can develop:
  • Broken teeth and roots
  • Periodontal disease
  • Abscesses or infected teeth
  • Cysts or tumors in the mouth
  • Malocclusion, or misalignment of the teeth and bite
  • Broken (fractured) jaw
  • Palate defects (such as cleft palate)

Pet dental Exams & Cleanings

Recent studies have shown that 70% of adult cats and 80% of adult dogs show symptoms of oral disease. To prevent painful oral disease and infections, we recommend a routine dental exam and cleaning at least once a year.

Before your pet’s dental cleaning, we’ll use full-mouth x-rays to check for issues below the gum line. We’ll also evaluate and chart each tooth’s health, looking for abnormal loss of gum tissue (AKA periodontal pockets), which can become filled with infection causing bacteria. This thorough dental exam helps us form a treatment plan to address any immediate problems, like broken or infected teeth. It also allows us to keep a big picture view of your pet’s dental health throughout their lifetime.

Dental Surgery for Dogs & Cats

Even with regular dental care, unexpected conditions can occur. Whether your dog has a fractured tooth or your cat is experiencing painful resorptive lesions (painful erosion of the tooth enamel resulting in probable extraction), Mountainside Veterinary Hospital can help! Using our state-of-the-art dental equipment, we can safely and efficiently get to the root of pets’ oral pain.
